Warrior Dash has been bold from the beginning. The race series was among the first to launch adventure style races four years ago and is now the world’s largest running series. Thousands of runners will be challenged to conquer 12 obstacles when it’s Colorado’s turn to host the event August 18 and 19. Challenges include climbing over rusted wreckage, maneuvering through an 80 foot long mud pit and launching yourself over a fiery pit. Warriors ready for battle take off in waves every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The race is followed by live music food and beer.

The founder of Warrior Dash, Joe Reynolds, owns the active entertainment company Red Frog Events. The company also puts on the Beach Dash and Great Urban Race. Reynolds wanted to put together a race that was about being challenged and staying on your toes. “After our first race in Illinois knew it was something special. We received a flood of emails. People wanted us to come to their cities. So we listened,” says the Foreman of Festivities, Alex Yount. They listened indeed. In 2010 there were 10 races and 150,000 participants. This year there are more that 50 races including in Canada and Australia with 750,000 participants.

Even with adventure races dotting the map nearly every weekend, the Warrior Dash sees it as encouraging. “The competition is great for what we are promoting. Even with the Warrior Dash each race is unique in its own right,” says Yount. Colorado’s event sets itself apart with an added obstacle. It’s called altitude and may as well be obstacle number thirteen. But when the backdrop is the rugged Rocky Mountains how could you shy away?

The races may be extremely tough but they also have a humanitarian side. Participants who raise $250 or more for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will have access to the VIP area. Private showers, free food and beverages are part of the experience. All money collected will help cover the costs of providing pediatric care to families.
