Adventure & Relax in Steamboat

Steamboat, Colorado

Steamboat, Colorado

Steamboat, Colorado isn’t exactly right off the I-70 corridor, which means it can often be overlooked as a vacation destination. But with prime outdoor recreation for summer and winter in the Rocky Mountains it shouldn’t be. Located about three hours from Denver, a calming drive past reservoirs and wide-open spaces immediately kicks on the vacation senses. And don’t expect cell service until you reach Steamboat, either. You may panic for a minute but could soon find yourself actually focusing on the vacation ahead.

Winter may be this town’s claim to fame but even when the champagne powder melts, it’s tops for both water recreation and mountain junkies. Choose from floating, rafting, paddling, fishing, hiking and mountain biking.

FLYFISH1

For the angler, look no further than Steamboat Flyfisher guided trips. One of the best parts about this outfitter is you can have a complete experience without giving up your whole day. Fish deep holes and sharp-cut banks at Hoogendorn Ranch (half-day, $635 for two guests). Or sign up for a half-day private float trip down the lower Yampa River in search of rainbows, browns, cutthroats, brookies and whitefish ($495 for two people).

To mix mountains into your trip take the gondola up the mountain to explore more than 50 miles of trails. For those focused more on a surging heart rate than a thrilling downhill ride, you can peddle right on up the summit. Swing by Steamboat Bike Shop, located inside the Sheraton Steamboat to get your adventure started. How’s that for convenience?

Rent an adult all-day Downhill or XC bike rental ($125 or opt for cruiser bike ($25 for full day) for a slower pace around the resort and town.

After a day of summer activities dine waterfront at Arum Restaurant. It’s not just the serene location that makes this one of the most popular spots in town. Dishes mixed with seasonal ingredients and a well-versed wine menu also attracts repeat guests.

Begin your dinner with Korean BBQ Colorado Lamb Ribs ($13), and then turn your attention to the Grilled Scottish Salmon (Thai Coconut Curry, Soba Noodles, Bok Choy and Asian Mushrooms; $29).

With so much activity on the agenda, you may as well stay a night or two. Ok, even a whole week in this town would be tough to turn down. Turn it in at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort, which has just completed a $16 million renovation. Top draws include the mountainside pool oasis that becomes even more awesome with an in-pool hot tub, outdoor fireplace and poolside massages.

For the family travelers, or those with a large group, check out the Mountain Suites. Designed as studios and one, two and three bedroom condos, this room style include a mountain sophisticated décor like marble countertops, large soaking tubs, and natural stone gas fireplaces(from $169 per night).

You will also find two restaurants in which to dine. Fuel up for a day of outdoor adventure with the banana’s foster French toast at the Sevens Mountain Grill, or linger over a glass of red wine and slow roasted prime rib at the end of the day at Saddles Bar & Grill. The fitness center, though located in the basement, is up to date with all the get up you will need for a complete workout.

Carri’s Catch: Find a play room that includes foosball, billiards and shuffleboard at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort. Excellent way for parents to be able to take somewhat of a break and enjoy the property!

It is such a neat town especially for all seasons. Spring, with the cooler temps would be one of the best times to go. Keep me posted on your travels!

Having been to Craig, Meeker and Rifle, last year, Steamboat is the logical next stop- sometime next Spring.
