Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs, Ouray CO

It was rumors of gold that brought people to Ouray in the 1870’s. The same rumor brought me here, but in search of a different kind of gold. This gold is in the heart of the community, the scenery and the experience of Ouray.

I realized I struck a gold mine after meeting Karen Avery, one of the owners of the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs. She and her husband, Rich, left a big city life in Denver after being enticed by an ad in the classifieds of the Denver Post. The Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs was for sale and it was soon theirs.

Soon after the purchase and learning the in’s and out’s of the lodging industry, they decided to take it a step further. To the earth conscious in us all, Karen and Rich, took the initiative to reduce their natural gas consumption by 70 percent in 4 years. To do this, they use the geo thermal hot springs as a water source around the property and even to heat the rooms.

This warm and welcoming property fits every category for a vacationer. First, there is the adventure, steps from your door. Hike to the booming sounds of the Box Canyon Falls, brave a jeep tour to the top of historic Imogene pass, or discover the genuine charm along Main Street.

Next, there is relaxation. Natural geo thermal hot springs terrace up the mountainous backyard of the box springs. The rooms are cozy, filled with that old western charm. Homemade muffins from a local baker, fruit, coffee and juice will energize your morning.

And maybe the most important of all, realignment. I asked Karen what the greatest part of her job is. She told me when people are able to connect with the ones they came with. Here you will reconnect to the old treasures in your life and connect to the new ones at the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs.
