In December of 1956, rock and roll history was made. That’s when Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley had a spontaneous jam session together in Memphis, TN. Luckily, someone in the sound booth hit record… because the evening became known as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in all of history.

The recordings have been turned into a show now playing at Denver’s Buell Theater. Million Dollar Quartet will take you inside the studio with music portraying these legendary characters and featuring a score of timeless rock hits like “That’s All Right” and “Ring of Fire.” Just try to resist tapping your toes to “Blue Suede Shoes” or showing off some moves when you hear “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” This show is about great music, plain and simple. But there is some drama and a few plot twists that hold the audience’s attention throughout.

Grab your tickets now for the national tour of Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet, a high-energy, rock ‘n’ roll-inspired show that will be at Denver’s Buell Theatre through March 9 only.  At only $20 per ticket, this Tony award-winning show had the audience on its feet most of the night and was worth every penny.

Carri’s Catch: Don’t miss the one-of-a-kind Hard Rock International Memorabilia displayed in the lobby of the Buell Theatre. The cases contain priceless items such as Jerry Lee Lewis’ paisley velvet jacket, Elvis Presley’s long brown suede trench coat, Johnny Cash’s Natural 1971 Martin D-35 guitar and Carl Perkkins’ Blue Gibson ’96 Country Gentleman electric guitar.

Million Dollar Quartet performance dates are Tuesday to Sunday at 7:30 PM, and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 PM. For tickets, visit denvercenter.org.

Review: Mama Mia at Denver Center for Performing Arts

The award-winning musical Mamma Mia! recently played at the Denver Center and local ABBA lovers had the chance to relive (or maybe see for the first time) all of their greatest hits.

The popular comedic drama based on ABBA’s music is centered around a wedding that is about to take place on a beautiful Greek island. The bride-to-be wants her father to walk her down the aisle, but there’s one problem: he may be one of three men. All of them set off for the island, where she tries to figure out which one is her real dad in time for the big day. Hilarity ensues in this high energy, classic musical that has received nominations for Best Musical and Best Orchestrations.

The audience can’t help but sing and dance along to ABBA favorites like “Dancing Queen” and “Mamma Mia” throughout the show, which lasts about two and a half hours.

ABBA composers Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus were a part of Mamma Mia’s development from the start. In fact, director Phyllida Lloyd said, “Mamma Mia is the musical Benny and Bjorn wrote years ago. They just decided to release the songs first.”

Since the show does contain some adult language and themes, it’s probably best for older children and adults. And also be prepared for one heck of a fun ending that is a standing ovation turned concert!

The Story Line

Beautiful music and standout acting retell this true story of hope and tragedy. Eva Perón is a charismatic and powerful Argentinian who rose from the ashes to become First Lady. Eva Perón has been considered one of the world’s most powerful, controversial and  influential women. She was loved by her people as a champion for the poor, but also knocked for  greed and selfishness.

The Set and Cast

Tony nominee Josh Young and  Caroline Bowman star in Evita with outstanding performances. Caroline proves she’s a genuine triple-threat with her skillful song and dance numbers portraying Eva Perón herself. A bold set captures the essence of Argentina and its capitol Buenos Aires. Christopher Oram designed the set to move from the nightclub to a gorgeous palace with ease. Tango dancers move to the sounds of a full orchestra with the scenic backdrop. That bold, passionate feel pulls you into the story.

The Music

This seven time Tony-winning musical contains beautiful songs that could only enhance the passionate story. Some of the most loved and unforgettable songs in the performance include:

  • Don’t Cry For Me Argentina

Webber wrote this trademark song, beautifully added with Rice’s lyrics.

Also included are…

  • High Flying, Adored
  • Another Suitcase In Another Hall

Denver Brass Shows Highlight Classic Tunes

Denver’s all-brass ensemble is drawing on Christmas traditions in its “Brass of Christmas Past.” The shows are scheduled for 12/21 and 12/22 at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. For those attenting, expect Christmas music and stories, but — like all Denver Brass shows — each tune will be performed in a unexpected way. “The ‘Brass of Christmas Past’ honors the traditions we hold near to our hearts during this special season,” said Kathy Brantigan, Executive Director of The Denver Brass. “This year’s show will highlight crowd favorites, songs we’ve all grown up hearing — but they’ll be performed in the unexpected and inspiring way that has become a Denver Brass trademark.
  • Shows often involve smoke machines, creative lighting, floor lifts and more — Brass of Christmas Past will also incorporate some of these entertaining effects.
  • KEZW’s Rick Crandall will host the show, leading audience members through the performance, from nostalgic classics to quirky holiday tunes.
  • Prior to the show, holiday elves will pass out goodies to young attendees.
