Review: Chicago at the Denver Center for Performing Arts

Chicago at the Denver Theater

Chicago at the Denver Theater

If there’s one show that guarantees a good time, it’s Chicago. The Broadway musical revival has been a hit for many years, with six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy, and now it’s playing at the Buell Theatre in Denver through March 23rd.

While other musicals dazzle the audience with over-the-top props, set design and costumes, Chicago doesn’t need any of that. This classic is all about the music, and a great story.

The perfect mix of catchy songs, impressive dance choreography, and sultry scenes, Chicago gets the crowd singing along right from the start with the popular tune “All That Jazz.” Star performer Bianca Marroquin, who plays Roxie, is charming, and catches the crowd’s attention with her powerful voice and quick wit.

Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, the musical is a satire on the corruption of justice, and celebrity criminals. The plot focuses on two women accused of murder, Velma Kelly (who killed both her husband and her sister) and Roxie Hart (who murdered her lover and convinced her husband it was a burglar). Both women become tabloid regulars, and actually compete with each other for fame.

The show is playing 7:30PM nightly, and at 2:00PM on Saturday & Sunday. Tickets are $20 to $100 at denvercenter.org (or call 303-893-4100 to order via phone).
