Inn on Fairy Street Q&A

Inn on Ferry Street Q&A

In case you forgot that Detroit used to be prosperous, a stay at the Inn on Ferry Street will remind you. The inn consists of four Victorian mansions and two carriage houses. The inn has been elaborately renovated true to its original style, with stunning carved-wood banisters, Victorian turrets, and grand fireplaces. We chat with owner Susan Mosey to learn more about the challenges and history of the property.

Q: How do you describe the atmosphere on the Inn?

Visitors who have stayed at the Inn share that the atmosphere is warm, inviting, and nostalgic yet it has all the modern conveniences of this time.  Since the homes are on the historic register, the Inn has been restored as closely as possible to the era it was built.  Even the landscaping has retained as many original trees and shrubs as possible with the addition of new native plantings that reflect what may have been present at that time.  The feeling is like stepping back in time and is the perfect setting for weddings and other events.

Q: What has been the biggest challenge of running the Inn? And biggest reward?

Probably the biggest challenge is maintaining the Inn’s uniqueness and aesthetic appeal.  Each of the four restored Victorian homes and the two carriage houses as well as every room has its own unique and elegant character.

The biggest reward is hearing complements and reading positive reviews about the Inn.  It makes all the dedicated work that goes into operating the Inn a satisfying experience for everyone.

Q: Who has been your most memorable guest?

A wide range of people have stayed at the Inn, including well known musicians, artists, high- profile individuals from around the world, movie stars, notable scholars, and other celebrities.

Q: What do you most love about Detroit?

I love the excitement and energy that is being generated by the positive changes happening in the city.  Especially endearing is having the opportunity to be a catalyst and a significant part of the continuous revitalization occurring in Midtown.

Q: What are the must-dos while in the area?

Detroit’s Cultural Center is located in the heart of Midtown so it is convenient to visit all the great museums such as the Detroit Institute of Arts.  Midtown also has wonderful restaurants that range from quirky and fun to fine dining.  There are also numerous retail shops that offer interesting local goods as well as luxury brands are represented in Midtown.  A great time to visit Detroit is when Midtown Detroit, Inc. holds their exciting events, which include Dlectricity, Noel Night, and ArtX Detroit.

Q: Tell us a little about your background. Have you owned a business before?

My background is in urban renewal and grass roots community planning, which has led to a larger role in Midtown’s community development, revitalization, and economic growth.  I have not owned a business prior to this however I have provided a wide range of assistance to new businesses locating to Midtown and have acted as a partner to numerous community initiatives.

This is fabulous. No place on Earth, least of all a fine city like Detroit, should give up on itself. Glad to see that so many are working to restore Motor City’s sense of worth.
