Review: Denver’s Imbibe Whiskey Throwdown

Whiskey Glazed and Confused

Whiskey.  Doughnuts. Supporting high achieving children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

May 15th, 2015 saw, for the second year in a row, this TRIFECTA of awesomeness come to fruition in the Whiskey Throwdown and Doughnut Showdown 2.0 at Thrive Ballpark in LoDo.

TWO-NOO brought together dozens of local distilleries and purveyors of the glazed, puffed pastries that we love so much in a playfully competitive, lighthearted atmosphere for the second year running.  The first go around was such a success that they thought they’d give it a whirl once more, this time with even more vendors to enjoy.

Big names like Breckenridge Brewery and VooDoo Doughnuts were busy doing their thang alongside lesser-known gems like Laws Whiskey House and Habit Doughnut Dispensary.  Drizly Liquor Delivery was in the house as well wheelin’ and dealin’, as they are known to do from time to time.

Thrive Ballpark was filled to the brim (hang on tight to your glass! An accidental bump could send it flying!) with enthusiasts.  Whiskey enthusiasts, doughnut enthusiasts, local “Denver stuff” enthusiasts, non-profit enthusiasts… Everyone was so enthusiastic! Table after table of deliciousness and libations will tend to do that, I suppose.

Indeed it is true that all of this merrymaking, whiskey tasting and doughnut baking was responsible for my personal revelation that a French toast flavored doughnut is, in fact, the perfect pairing with a blue corn bourbon.  However, this night was not all for kicks and giggles (even though there was plenty of that, to be sure).  This event was thrown in honor of the all-star beneficiary: Minds Matter.

If you popped by the event you couldn’t miss the abundance of good people in the Minds Matter tee shirts volunteering their time to make sure this event was such a success.  These same people spend much more time volunteering as mentors for accomplished high school students from low-income families.

Since 2004, Minds Matter of Denver has been working very successfully to provide the resources to disadvantaged high-schoolers in order for them to achieve the next level of their education.  To date, 100% of Minds Matter students have gone to college and 100% have received scholarships to do so.

Being a non-profit, they rely on the generosity of kindhearted individuals and businesses from in and around Denver.  The Whiskey Throwdown and Doughnut Showdown 2.0 waa wildly successful fundraiser and celebration of the generous and caring community in which we live.

So head down to Glazed and Confused, tip a glass of fine Downslope, feel good that that Minds Matter is hard at work, and look forward to 2016 when all of this will surely complete its own Triple Crown by coming back to us for a third year!

You know I’ll be there!
