Review: Golden Nugget in Las Vegas

Most visitors to Vegas make a beeline for the strip, but the Golden Nugget, a luxurious resort property with a hip attitude, is raising the bar on accommodations downtown. Located right in the middle of the excitement on Freemont Street in Downtown Vegas, the Golden Nugget is a sight to see with four towers of stylish rooms and suites that boast a contemporary design and luxe amenities like pillow-top mattresses, feather down comforters, 42-inch plasma TVs, and of course, incredible views of downtown and the Strip’s skyline.

But let’s not dwell too long on the rooms – after all, who comes to Vegas to sleep? The real attraction at the iconic Golden Nugget is the scene. The balcony at Gold Diggers on the second floor is Freemont Street’s best lookout point complete with a bar and dance floor. Right downstairs, mingle with the crowd at Rush Lounge, a sleek bar known for its signature cocktails or grab a beer at the International Beer Bar, which offers more than 40 different brews.

During the day head to The Tank, the property’s pool that feels more like a water park with a three-story, enclosed slide that (eek!) goes through an aquarium filled with sharks. If that thrilling but terrifying experience doesn’t sound enjoyable to you, set yourself up on one of the daybeds or cabanas instead, where you can soak up some sun and order a drink from the H2O Bar. There’s also an adults-only, two-level infinity pool called The Hideout located on the third floor.

If you’re a fan of seafood or a steak lover, make a reservation at the Chart House restaurant, which has a bar that wraps around a magnificent 75,000-gallon tropical aquarium. The property’s dining choices seem endless, ranging from Lillie’s Asian Cuisine, to Red Sushi, Grotto, Cadillac Mexican Cantina & Tequila Bar, Vic & Anthony’s, and quick-and-easy The Buffet.

And since it wouldn’t be Vegas without some gambling, don’t skip the Golden Nugget’s high-energy casino, complete with ever-popular slot machines, poker room, a four-table baccarat pit and a country club-like sports book.

While you’re staying at the Golden Nugget, make sure you carve out some time for a trip to Downtown Container Park, another unique attraction on Freemont Street in downtown Vegas. It’s basically an outdoor shopping and entertaining center made completely out of shipping containers. The funky look and unique boutique and food outlets make it a great photo opp and destination for the whole family (kids are allowed until 9 p.m.). After dark, stop by to listen to different bands that play in the outdoor amphitheater nightly.
