Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Bike Race to Pedal Through Denver

For the first time in the history of the Sports Authority Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Marathon and ½ Marathon to benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation, participants can pedal their way through the course. The inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Bike Tour will take cyclists on a scenic 24 mile tour of the Mile High City.  “We are trying to appeal to another audience. You don’t have to be a runner to participate,” explains Alan Culpepper, the course designer.

Culpepper sure knows how to turn the pavement- the two-time U.S. Olympian is the current state half marathon record holder in Colorado. He started working for the Competitor Group in 2010 designing running courses, including the one in Denver. To Culpepper, it’s not just about encouraging running but engaging more people in different kinds of fitness.

The course will hit the highlights of the city and music will be jamming for cyclists as well. “It’s not a race, it’s a tour. We will take riders to places they normally wouldn’t ride. We also go through all of the city parks so Wash, Cheesman and City Park,” says Culpepper.” Racers can also expect quite the cool dynamic- riding through streets that will be closed to cars.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Denver Bike Tour was met with great success in San Antonio last year. Wheels started turning when race organizers realized the success the race could see in Denver as well. “Colorado is known for its love of bicycling and is extremely bike-friendly, so we’re really excited to be able to offer this option to riders here,” said Kari Logan, Event Director. “So many athletes love to both ride and run, and this non-competitive format allows a broad range of people to experience Rock ‘n’ Roll in a new way.”
