Step up for Cancer Takes on Fight Against Dreaded Disease

Race organizers of Step up for Cancer are expecting more than 2,000 people to take on the fight against the deadly disease on August 5. Event Co-Director Amy Venturi hopes Step Up for Cancer raises money for more than 45 participating nonprofit organization.

“Step Up for Cancer invites all non-profits that touch cancer in any way to participate in our event, from prevention and research to advocacy and treatment,” says Venturi.

The event was first held four years ago at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Event organizers are hoping to smash last year’s goal of raising $140,000 by reaching more than $200,000. The proceeds will be  divided between the 45 non-profit organizations participating in Step Up for Cancer.

“The event is put on completely by volunteers. We have very little overhead, so all of the proceeds go directly to the non-profit organizations to aid in their efforts to help people who have been touched by cancer,” says (need title) Melissa Heiter.

Participants of Step Up for Cancer earn donations for one of the non-profit organizations by walking up and down a portion or all of the 33 rows of stairs at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Individuals or teams can raise additional funds by asking for donations from friends and family, knowing that the money will go directly to their cancer charity of choice.

“We are asking people to step up to fight cancer. We chose a stair climb to represent that and we wanted to do something different,” reveals Heiter. There will be an elite timed heat for competitive racers and a “stairless” course for people who don’t want to tackle the climb. Family and friends that are not racing are encouraged to come out for the festivities. Entertainment will not be lacking- expect bands, a yoga zone, massage area, face painters and vendors.

There are an estimated 20,000 Coloradoans being diagnosed with cancer each year. The event was developed ultimately, bridge a cure for cancer.   “We are thrilled to bring our entire State together to fight the battle against cancer,” said Amy Venturi, Event Director, Step Up for Cancer. “We designed this event to rally all generations in Colorado to Step Up in the most meaningful way and make an impact within our community,” says Venturi.

Cost for participation is $30. Individuals or teams can also raise additional funds by asking for donations from friends and family, knowing that the money will go directly to their cancer charity of choice.
