[Gallery not found] The Victorian town of Georgetown was missing one key element last year, a teahouse. Jeannette Peterson changed that when she opened the Saint James Tea Room in August of 2010. She named her business after the former hotel that once set up shop here in 1875, the Saint James Hotel. By transforming her former mercantile store, she soon offered much more than greeting cards, toys and books. The elegant tearoom highlights the history of Georgetown. Peterson wanted to make the building handicap accessible, which was no easy feat considering this building was built in 1875. A day at the architectural salvage yard in Denver proved to be worthwhile when she found a door that matched the one on the front entrance. The door replaced a window and voila! After a breezy five months it was already teatime.
The décor inside follows a mix ‘n matched theme. There is a long list of teas to choose from to fill your cup. The berry medley is the signature tea and features berries native to Georgetown. There are also black, green, white, oolong and herbal teas. All of the food and baked goods are made in house, and some will teach you a little somethin,’ like the black walnut cookie. Louis Dupuy, a former miner in Georgetown in 1873, opened a hotel and restaurant called the Hotel De Paris. One of his famous deserts was that very cookie and it lives on.
Upcoming for the holiday: The Saint James Tea Room will offer special treats for the holiday high teas the entire month of December. How does a pear almond Danish sound? Or the chai mouse in a chocolate cup? (You will want a refill!) There are also salmon tea sandwiches, peppermint meringue and a British plum tart.
