Weekend Getaway: Experiencing B Historic Savannah
Now that summer is in full swing, it is time to start planning your fall weekend getaway. If you’re looking towards October, Savannah is one of our favorite destinations. Georgia’s oldest city is particularly charming this time of year (temps and humidity have both come down) and the price-point is friendly for multiple budgets. Rich in history and bedecked in Spanish moss and gorgeous Antebellum architecture, Savannah is a cultural treasure chest. And there are activity options for all types: from ghost tours of Bonaventure Cemetery to savoring the craft cocktail scene or checking out an exhibit at the SCAD Museum of Art.
When it comes to booking a hotel, check out the B Historic. It’s a boutique property on a quiet, oak tree lined street in the cobblestoned downtown historic district. We love the vibe, where classic Southern elegance coexists with refreshingly modern interior design. When it comes to the dining and imbibing, the onsite Kitchen 320 is well worth a meal. Executive Chef William Herrington is from the area, and his focus is similar in style to the hotel decor: fusing traditional and modern. His menu focuses on contemporary takes of the low-country dishes he remembers his mother and grandmother cooking when he was a child. Try the sweet-tea chicken wings or succotash salad to start. For mains choose from a variety of meat and seafood choices. There are also craft cocktails and regional beer and wine selections all served in a glamorous location with mid-century furnishings.
And whether exploring the city on foot or doing your tour via horse-drawn carriage, there is plenty do just steps from the hotel. You can start by just strolling the cobblestone streets, gazing at the architecture and perhaps doing a bit of shopping at one of the many independent storefronts. Forsyth Park, home to Savannah’s famous oak-framed fountain, is also walking distance, as is the Mercer House, which appeared in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and the Telfair Museums, where you can see everything from modern art to realist paintings.
Getting to Savannah from many parts of the country is easy. The city shares an airport with nearby Hilton Head and the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport offers non-stop service to 25 airports including Dallas, Atlanta, Washington DC, New York, Boston and Detroit among others.
