Herman Gulch Hike

For some of the most majestic views in Colorado you don’t have to travel far from Denver. Herman Gulch trial head is one hour from the mile high city, near the Loveland ski area. It’s challenging with an elevation gain of2,000 feet, but all the better!

The trail starts on an old sawmill road, but hang tight, the better views are coming. After about a mile the trail drops you into a meadow field bursting with wildflowers. A stream runs wild on the Southside, a forest on the north side, and mountain peaks reaching to the skies east and west. Keep trekking on and after 3.5 miles you will summit to the Lake.

The temperature was slightly cooler at the top with a welcomed breeze. The deep green of the grass, accompanied by the crystal clear water makes for a peaceful break to take it all in.

The trail back down was steep but it makes you slow down to appreciate all the details in the mountain beauty.

Directions: I-70 West, Exit on 218, and turn right, get ready you are there!

Distance: 7 miles RT
