7 Riverside European Destinations

Wasserburg

Europe holds some of the most romantic cities and sights in the world. But what can make an already culturally fascinating, romantic, and exciting visit to Europe even better? Checking out the gems along the rivers of course! Here are just a few of Europe’s most amazing river cities.

Trier

The oldest city in Germany is Trier. This European city is known as the “second Rome” due to its Western Roma Empire presence and imperial residence. With a plethora of cultural cities and beautiful sites, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the imperial thermal baths, this treasure holds it’s ground near the Moselle River. Look out for fantastic events and historical monuments like the Porta Nigra.

Bad Bertrich

For some more thermal bathing for health, healing, and relaxation, go to the volcanic lakes of the Vulkaneifel district. This is no regular thermal bathing experience though, this is home to the only thermal Glauber’s salt springs in Germany. This beautifully scenic area is also along the Moselle River.

Lake Constance

Splitting itself between three different countries in Europe, is stunning Lake Constance. In the area is the charming town of Wasserburg and tourist hot spot of Lindau am Bodensee, both in Germany, the city of Bregenz in Austria, as well as a few lakeside towns in Switzerland. The Rhine River runs through this beautiful lake adding to the beauty in the area.

Chur

Not the most impressive sight of the Rhine River, but after all, this is where it all begins. Only a mere river, possibly a stream that could be played in like a puddle on a rainy day. OK, perhaps not that small, but compared with other cities along the mighty Rhine, this charming city is where the mightiness begins its flow through Switzerland and continuing through Europe.

Schaffhausen

This is where the Rhine beings to show it’s might. There is a twenty meter drop at Rhienfall and it’s a stunning sight indeed. Take a boat to the base to see the falls up close, but be prepared to get wet.

Cologne

Here is the ending of the Rhine River in Germany as it makes it’s exit towards the Netherlands. Cologne, Germany is a fascinating and spectacular city to see this river. The Gross St. Martin Cathedral resides on the riverside which makes for a dramatic scene as the river makes it’s way north.

Paris

A list of European cities along beautiful rivers would be incomplete without mentioning the stunning Seine river which flows through France, namely, the romantic city of Paris. When in Paris, a luxury 2015 river cruises across Europe is a must do for any two lovebirds, a fun group of friends, or even a family. The iconic Eiffel Tower will grace it’s presence along the way as the Parisian air wisps away your hair and you enjoy your river excursion along one of the most legendary waterways in Europe.

Great list! I have seen Paris, among these cities- and a handful of other riparian cities besides. The river adds an enormous dose of romance to any city which honours it.
