How Bingo Began In Colorado
In America, the very first bingo game was played in 1929 but it wasn’t until 1933 that it became a copyrighted game in the country. In the past several decades, bingo has not only become increasingly popular in the US but it is now played across the world.
Bingo has also spawned several versions which include mobile bingo apps and online bingo websites. This has caused mobile gaming to see rapid growth from 2011 to 2013. In an interview with Gaming Intelligence, Michael Buckley executive chairman of Gaming Realms, operator of Iceland Bingo said: “The online gaming environment is expanding, particularly in the mobile and tablet space where we are focused, and we are optimistic for the future of the company.” Throughout 2013, the online gaming company invested in its technology, enabling them to compete in the increasing mobile and tablet gaming market; and marketing its brands to increase user activity.
Although online gaming is only legal in Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey, the traditional form of bingo is still widely played in the country especially in Colorado. In fact, there are more than 60 bingo halls in the Rocky Mountain State.
It was believed that Bingo started in Colorado when a local pastor in northeast Denver was trying to raise funds for his church,The Annunciation. Because of difficulties funding said church that lasted for decades, the church has to settle and provide schooling for Catholics in an old, deserted schoolhouse for $50/month.
In 1950, Colorado passed a law legalizing charity bingo which prompted Pastor Charles H. Hagus to launch Bingo Night. Because of this successful plan, they were able to buy the old Greek Orthodox Church. The building where the congregation transferred was called the Hagus Hall. Sadly, this historic landmark symbolizing the state’s bingo history was demolished in 1986 to make way for local HUD town homes. The landmark may no longer exist but the game still lives on in the hearts of Colorado’s natives. Here are other fun facts about bingo and the Rocky Mountain State:
