Summertime in Big Bear: Top Fun Things to Do

Southern California has four glorious seasons, and the best place to experience all of them is in Big Bear Lake in the lush San Bernardino National Forest. Big Bear has a vast array of activities for each season that every member of your family can enjoy.

If you’re planning to spend your vacation within July 1 until Labor Day, then you’re in for a treat. This mountain lake escape can bring you the best summer of your life.

If you want your trip to have the familiar comforts of home with a touch of luxury, book one of the Big Bear cabins in the area. It provides the flexibility of cooking your meals and ample space to enjoy with your family or friends. Most of these cabins are pet-friendly too, so your furry friend can join in the fun.

To make the most out of your big bear trip, here is a list of things to do during the summer months.

1. Go Hiking

You do not have to be a professional hiker to experience the wonders of the Pacific Crest Trail or PCT. Big Bear is part of this world-famous trail that spans 2,650 miles. It goes from Mexico, all the way to Canada, passing through the states of California, Oregon, and Washington.

During the hike, you can get a glimpse of the glistening blue lake and beautiful wildflowers endemic to the area.

Before embarking on your hiking adventure, secure an adventure pass and trail map from the Big Bear Discovery Center. You can choose from three distinct trails with various difficulty levels. If you want a relaxed nature walk, you can choose the Woodland Interpretive Trail.

If you want a bit of a challenge with a steady ascent, the Cougar Crest Trail is perfect for you. If you’re ready for an exhilarating climb to a gorgeous 360 degree vie of Big Bear, Castle Rock Trail is the best option.

2. Visit the Big Bear Discovery Center

You can bring everyone to the Big Bear Discovery Center (yes, even Fido). It’s near most of the Big Bear cabins in the area. This dog-friendly area on the North Shore has a treasure trove of information and program. You can choose from the activities that the center offers, which include nature hikes, guided lake tours, campfire programs and arts, and crafts programs for kids.

Remember to sign up for a kayak or canoe tour for a day of fun and learning. Your tour guide will bring you around the lake so you can get a glimpse of ducks, cranes, herons, and egrets. If you’re lucky, you could see the majestic bald eagle who migrates to Big Bear during summer.

3. Experience Water Sports

The sparkling Big Bear Lake is the heart of Southern California. During the warm summer months, the water is the most welcoming. Many vacationers recommend renting a canopy-covered boat that you can use to cruise around the lake.

If you crave adrenaline-pumping water sports, you may try jet skiing and wakeboarding. For a more relaxed adventure, paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing are great options.

You may also go on a fishing trip and catch rainbow trout, bass, or catfish. It would be nice to fire these fishes on the grill in your cabin.

Summer can bring one of the best memories for you and your family. These activities will surely make your Big Bear vacation one for the books.
