Middle Fork of the Powder River, Wyoming
The Middle Fork of the Powder River is a less discovered part of Wyoming but offers unsurpassed beauty. This spectacular scenic part of the Old West is rich with legends of outlaws. As stories go, bandits took to the area in the 1800’s. The Old West is still alive with stories of Butch Cassidy, outlaw caves, Nate Champion’s shootout and the Dull Knife Battle.

While some of the land is privately owned, there are still plenty of public lands to enjoy camping, hiking, sight seeing and trout fishing. Steep canyons saturated in deep reds, open grassland parks and forests will captivate your sights. Chances of spotting wildlife are nearly 100 percent. Watch out for elk, mule deer, antelope, mountain lions and eagles.
This area is located about 20 miles southwest of Kaycee, Wyoming.
Getting there: From Kaycee, Wyoming, take Wyoming Highway 190 about 15 miles to Barnum. Follow the BLM Bar C Road 5 miles south. The BLM Bar C Road turns into the BLM Outlaw Cave Road which heads west about 3 miles up the mountains to Outlaw Cave Campground on the rimrock of the Middle Fork of the Powder River Canyon. Outlaw Cave Road is closed in the winter from November 16 through April 15. Make sure you are taking the roads with a high clearance car!
