Europe boasts castles, Japan its ryokans, and, though our country’s history is short compared to most destinations, the United States has hundreds of heritage hotels that bring a real sense of place. The Hotel Boulderado is one of those places that captures your attention with it’s deep history. Built at the base of the foothills in 1909, the hotel played a great role in making Boulder the tourist destination it is today. Funded with $100 stock subscriptions offered to the local community, it quickly became the grand dame of the city.

Several historic elements remain in place to recreate the glamour guests first experienced in the hotel’s early days. In the lobby you will find a captivating stained-glass canopy ceiling, antiques and the original safe. An elevator operator runs the 1908 Otis elevator that has also carried famous guests including Helen Keller and Louis Armstrong. Water from the Arapahoe Glacier runs through an ornate fountain in the lobby. The rooms are old-school elegant, with Victorian flare. Modern touches like the pillow-top mattresses and flat screen TVs add comfort.
