DONE!

This year’s Liberty Run at Denver’s Wash Park is especially meaningful to the founders of the race. Proceeds from the event are donated to Parthenia Jones, who is battling stage four liver cancer. Creators of the race, Lonnie and Michelle Somers got to know Jones after she volunteered at many of their events. They call her “Potts” for short and say the cheer she brings is equivalent to a firework lighting up the night sky. “Pott’s has been there for us. Now it’s time for us to be there for her. I am excited for her to see how many people care about her in the community she has supported for 30 years,” says Lonnie.

The race organizers  are involved in many events including one close to their hearts, the Race for Fetal Hope that benefits a foundation they started called Fetal Hope Foundation. Lonnie and Michelle started the foundation after their daughters were born premature at just 20 weeks old. Lonnie remembers the fear he faced as a father. “You are thinking of their first smile, first steps and what it would be like to take them to ice cream. When I hear the word Daddy I realize how lucky we are. Even when they fight as all kids do.”

Ashley and Aspen, now 9, were born premature at just 20 weeks.

Lonnie and Michelle’s daughters Ashley and Aspen are now 9 years old and are already following in their parent’s footsteps of giving back. The two recently made several homemade items to sell at a garage sale. They donated the money raised to Children’s Hospital and the Fetal Hope Foundation.

The Somers’ started Fetal Hope so families don’t have to encounter the frustrations and fear they felt. “We help families through that. Our goal is to be a resource for all fetal information. We want to keep people from saying if only I had known.” The foundation serves as an advocate for 15,000-25,000 families a year, helping them navigate and find resources for the life threatening condition.

To support “Potts” come out for the 4 mile Liberty Run at Wash Park July 4th. There is even a 1-mile firecracker run for the kids. The fun carries on off the course with vendors, food and drink and a costume contest. Patriotic gear is highly encouraged so don’t forget to wear red white and blue. Let Freedom ring!
