Racers Dodge Zombies at Run for Your Lives 5k

Co-creator of the “Run for Your Lives” 5k describes it as movie like experience. “Zombies dress up and come onto the set.” In this case the set is dubbed as a race course with eager participants trudging through obstacles as horror like zombies stay quick on their heels. Chances are high that you really will feel like you are running for you life, not just the finish line. Come July 14,  it’s Colorado’s turn to host the show at Thunder Valley Motorcross in Lakewood.

Derrick Smith and Ryan Hogan created the race.”We liked the idea of run for your lives. So we asked what are people going to run from?” reveals Smith. Playing off pop culture, zombies came into play after the hit TV series “Walking Dead” received rave reviews. The race sees extra success because they reach a demographic often ignored in the fitness realm. “We don’t just focus on people that are adventure obsessed. We also target people like video game enthusiasts who normally wouldn’t come out for races.”

The race course is similar to the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books many of us dug our noses into as kids. Here’s the deal and part of the scare- there is no direct line to the finish. In fact, there are multiple paths to reach the finish but just as many dead ends. Choose wisely!

The goal of racers is to finish with the three flags they are outfitted with at the start. On the flip- the goal of the zombies is to make sure each participant finishes without a single flag. If you are garnished of your flags you can still trek on for the fun but are marked as undead come the finish.

The wild zombies hungry for flags are are volunteers fueled to chase you down! But don’t let fear get the best of you.”It’s not about the quickest, strongest it’s about wanting to accomplish something. Plus you can come out, pretend and escape” says Smith.

Keep in mind:

*Derricks best advice? There is safety in numbers. You don’t need to be the fastest

*Plan on staying after the event for an after party filled with zombie related activities

*Must be 14 years or older to race
