A Complete Workout in 30 Minutes?
Word on the street is: Give trainer Howard Waldstreicher 30 minutes and you will walk (or crawl) away with the workout of a lifetime. I was skeptical. With so many classes topping 60 minutes, I wondered how he could get the job done in half the time. But with a look at his credentials, including having coached the Bryan Brothers (The best professional doubles team in the history of the ATP circuit) and Serena Williams with the same efficiency he brings to his Cherry Creek studio, he had my attention.
I tried the Half Hour Power (Power Band Yoga & Back Power classes are also available). The class is structured around a variety of stretch bands to add resistance to funtional movements. Expect explosive and powerful drills that include running with the bands from side to side, mixing in shuffling and sprinting. Push ups and lunges with medicine balls, also incorporating the bands, art part of the extreme workout.
Each move is meant to be intense and efficient to build core muscles as well as agility, blanace and stablility. All of the moves are done standing up, which is part of Howard’s traning philospy. “Most people are at their desks all day. We want to reverse those effects. In a standing position, core, legs, and arms all work together for balance and power.”
The workouts change every two weeks to aid in muscle confusion but always focus on footwork and reactive core training. Classes are limited to 8 people so Howard can easily correct form and focus on coaching. And in just thirty minutes you will experience dynamic and explosive moments that will leave sweaty puddles on the floor. “Research shows that short, intense workouts are more effective for fat burning, having more energy and losing inches. People don’t longer workouts, they just need more intensity,” says Howard.
For results: Howard suggets going 2-3 times a week.
