Minimum Wage Opens at Avenue Theater

A hilarious and original comedy is playing at Denver’s Avenue Theater. The five crew cast of “Minimum Wage” takes audience members inside the franchise “Happy Burger.” In a unique mix of comedy and a capella music, the crew shows audience members the ropes of working inside the fast food giant.

Plays through August 3. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30PM, and select Thursdays at 7:30PM

Castmember Damon Guerrasio takes the stage as comedians, actors and singers on stage.

Carri: What drew you to perform in “Minimum Wage”

Damon: I first heard about the play from Bob Wells, Avenue Theater owner and director extraordinaire, while performing a two man show last summer called Love Child (also directed by Nick Sugar) at the Avenue.  He said “It’s hilarious!  A bunch of nerds singing a cappela while working at a fast food joint. It’s perfect for you.”  When I walked into callbacks and noticed everyone else looked just like me (nerdy with glasses), even the girls, I thought “Yes!  These are my people.”  I later found out most of them had dressed the part whereas I just dressed myself.

Carri: Do you prefer acting or singing?

Damon: Both!  If you tank one you can rely on the other to pull you through.  Or if you nail both then you’re a double threat!  Now, if only I could dance!  Guess I’ll have to fall back on modeling.  Hand modeling.

Carri: How did you launch your acting career?

Damon: I signed with my first agency when I was 25 and started doing commercial work then.  I didn’t get back into theater until a few years ago when I stopped playing in bands.  My evenings opened up and I decided to fill them with auditioning and rehearsing for plays.  It’s been life affirming.  Don’t get me wrong.  Commercials, film, and rock and roll are fun, but there’s nothing like the family of theater.

Carri: What has been the most challenging part of your career?

Damon: Well, 1; hanging in there during the dry spells and 2; making the right decisions when the work comes.  I think a lot of actors will agree with the old adage; “When it rains, it snows”.  Long lasting droughts of waiting tables, schlepping gear, and parking cars just to make your nut.  And then getting two or three great acting job offers all at the same time.  In the second case, however, I find its better to take the leap.  Do the thing you’ve never done or are most afraid of.

Carri: Where do you see yourself in a few years?

Damon: Not in jail.  I’m optimistic, perhaps foolishly so.

Carri What are your hobbies off stage?

Damon: Well im a huge movie and television junkie.  anything lowbrow.  Like my favorite TV shows are “It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia”, “Bob’s Burgers” and “Archer”. But really, spending time with friends and family.  The people who love, support, and grudgingly accept me.  The folks who make me laugh when there’s nothing to laugh about.  It is my goal to return the favor.
