Events like the Snowshoe Edition of the ensure runners can take on the scenic and adventurous mountain trails any time of year. The series kicked off January 6 with a crowd of nearly 300 runners ready to charge the trails surrounding Beaver Creek Mountain.  Having never run on snowshoes, I admit I was a little nervous about the trek ahead. But after the sound of the starting gun, racers took off running, snowshoes and all. We took on steep climbs, even steeper downhills and tried to gain ground on the flat portions. Of course you can walk, but why not try and mix up the old routine?

There are two more races in the series on February 3 and March 3 offering both a 5k and 10k option. There is also a 1K run for the little ones. Having experienced the year’s kick-off race, I can say it’s an event worth hitting the high country for. Here are three reasons to get out on the trails.

It’s fun: Whether you are out to compete with the eye of the tiger, or enjoy time with your friends, the Snowshoe Edition of the Beaver Creek Mountain Running Series at cater to either need. Plus, there are a whole lot of people trudging the trails to motivate you.

It’s inexpensive: Meaning no lift ticket required! Gear includes snowshoes, warm clothing and sturdy trail runners. Free Demo Snowshoes provided by Atlas are available at the start/finish line to the first 50 or so athletes that need them.  Here is a list of gear we recommend trying. The $35 registration fee for the race won’t break the bank, either. Following the race, participants are invited to a meal provided by the Dusty Boot Steakhouse and a drink at the Metropolitan (included in registration).

It’s a heck of a workout: Whether blazing uphill trails or trying to keep balance on the down slopes, snowshoeing uses muscle groups other exercises don’t always hit on. Plus, it’s low impact and offers a way to stay in shape in the winter that keeps you outdoors.
