Best Fitting Shoe For Indoor Rock Climbing- We Found It!
There is a sweet new gym in Denver called Movement. It’s a climbing gym but also offers a line up of fitness classes- spin, pilates, yoga, strength and interval training. Of course, the main reason to join is for the bouldering and rope climbing. The routes change weekly and are set out for all levels.
As a beginner, I am sticking to the V0’s and trying to get a better grip on V1’s- especially those with a pitch. As with any sport, starting with the right gear is key. I was looking for an affordable shoe made for indoor climbing and looked to one of the most trusted brands in the outdoor industry- La Sportiva. The company recommended the Oxygym, which I have been climbing on for about a month and am digging it. The Oxygym is an all around climbing shoe made for the indoors. Here are the top reasons why.
1. The Price Point
The shoes ring at just $99 and it’s not because they take any shortcuts. It’s a great all around climbing shoe and has all the bells and whistles needed for indoor climbing. Why buy a shoe double in price if you don’t need the features? Of course, if you are doing crack climbing or more technical indoor or outdoor routes, La Sportiva offers shoes that are a better fit. I think it’s best to save the miles for the more expensive shoes when it’s needed for the elements. For smoother climbs and practice, this shoe is a go to.
2. The Fit
They feature a hook up and loop closure to allow for a custom fit. They also shut with Velcro so you are climbing in no time. The low symmetry design allows climbers to keep their feet in a comfortable position.
3. It’s machine washable.
While researching shoes, I didn’t find many that are. Or, it was a tedious process to get the kicks clean or you are stuck with the stink. You can toss these in the machine (liquid detergent, no powder) or hand was with a cloth or brush with warm water and mild soap. In any instance, let them air-dry inside- not in direct sunlight. Other features that battle odors include breathability, a moisture wicking design and an Air Tex Silver Lining.
Overall, this is a great all around shoe shoe, especially for beginners or people looking for a durable indoor gym shoe. And the colors rock out with a coral and blue-, which is much more appealing to me than the traditional washed out colors of climbing shoes.
