Comic Con – It isn’t just for nerds!
If you were roaming around the streets of downtown Denver this weekend, you might have been wondering if Halloween came early. No, you weren’t in a 4 month long coma, Denver Comic Con was in town! If you were not able to make it downtown, you missed one of the best “people-watching” events of the year. This was the 4th year that Comic Con was here in Denver. Comic Con is a convention that is not just about Comic Books, this event caters to fans of TV, Film, Video Games and Pop Culture in general. There were 75,000 fans estimated to have attended over the 3-day event.
The most notable and eye-catching draws to the convention is the Cosplay. For those not versed in nerd-speak, Cosplay is short for “costume play”. This is when fans dress up as their favorite characters from Comic Books, Movies, TV and anything else pop culture related. There were the expected costumes such as Star Wars, Star Trek and a plethora of Super Heroes. Some other creative cosplayers were characters from The Walking Dead, Ghostbusters, Pokemon, The Power Rangers and even The Dude from The Big Lebowski was in attendance.
But this convention has a lot more than costumes to keep you entertained. Booths where you could buy comic books, movies, t-shirts, masks, memorabilia and artwork were plentiful. There were also areas set-up where you had the opportunity meet, ask questions and even get your photo with over 300 comic-book creators, artists and celebrities. Some of the more notable guests included Lou Ferrigno(The Incredible Hulk), William Shatner(Captain Kirk from Star Trek) as well as Adam West & Burt Ward(Batman & Robin from the original TV Series). One unique and very cool section allowed you to watch artists as they sketch and color comic books live. These are some of the most talented artists I have ever seen.
Some of the larger displays were what really impressed me. Colorado Movie Cars brought in a great collection of cars from Knight Rider(KITT), Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Dukes of Hazard, Starsky & Hutch, and many more. The Star Wars Experience let you get up close and personal with various props from the movies. Life-sized Darth Vader, Bob Fett, Stormtroopers and various Droids were on display. There was even a backdrop that allowed attendees to get in a scene with R2-D2, C-3PO and a Landspeeder(see below).
There was something for everyone at Comic Con. If you happened to make it to this years convention, please let us know your favorite part. If you weren’t able to attend, make sure you put it on your calendars for next year. It is a must see event!!
