Denver Philharmonic Orchestra

The Denver Philharmonic Orchestra is doing something a little crazy. On February 1, concert goers are encouraged to bring their cell phones and tweet away during the performance. That’s right, you won’t be given snarky looks or escorted out to the street.  Viewers sitting in the “TweetSeats” section at the concert hall will receive real-time information about the music they are listening to, ask questions, and engage with other concert-goers during the concert. What a cool concept!

Here’s a Q & A with Valerie Clausen, Executive Director of the Denver Philharmonic.

Q: What can audience members expect at a Denver Philharmonic Show?

A:  A really great classical music concert that showcases some of the best talent in Denver in a friendly atmosphere!  We encourage our patrons to be comfortable and relaxed when they come to a concert so that they can take it all in and really feel what the orchestra is performing, and the passion with which they play. Our fantastic Music Director Adam Flatt programs exciting and innovative repertoire.

Q: What are the goals of the Denver Philharmonic?

A: Our goals are really pretty simple, we aim to provide a venue to nurture, develop and showcase the talents of our classically trained amateur musician. We also want to provide metro Denver Residents with a quality, approachable, and affordable live music experience. Live classical music is exciting, especially when it is made available to a diverse and enthusiastic audience.

Q: Why should people come check out show?

A: Because we aren’t your grandparents’ symphony. We are approachable. Our concerts have a homey feel missing from most classical music concerts. We are very friendly and get to know our patrons personally, and you can visit with the musicians during the intermission and after the show

Q: What have been some of the most exciting successes?

A: We’ve always attracted a good audience, but this Season we seem to really be taking off in terms of audience size. Our last concert attracted a record 750 patrons. It is great to see new faces in our audience and we especially love it when they come back to more concerts and bring their friends! We’ve also expanded our offerings by planning events around some of our concerts – like partnering with Charcoal Restaurant and offering a “Concert & Dinner” package for our November 16, 2013 concert, which sold out.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in 2013?

A: We are looking forward to opening our doors up to even more patrons!  We want to continue to reach people in our community and show them that symphonic live music is really very fun – especially in an intimate, friendly and relaxed environment like KPOF Hall.  We look forward to providing new and different experiences for our patrons, not just in terms of music, but the overall experience of attending a concert.
