Denver’s water war 5k, DRENCHED, is like a scene out of Braveheart. Prepare for battle! Before the starter’s gun fires, bagpipes will be pumping full blast as a line of marching figures hold no mercy launching hundreds of water balloons into the air. You can’t run or hide- everyone is sure to be soaked before the race officially starts.

If you do manage to dodge the initial onslaught of water balloons and hoses, don’t expect to be so lucky in the water war stations lining the course. Here is a quick preview of some of the water checkpoints.

*Water Bomb Alley- Buckets of balloons line portions of the course so you can DRENCH your friends and other teams. Beware- spectators will also be armed with water bombs so don’t drop your guard.

* Bucket station:  Grab a bucket and completely DRENCH someone!  WATCH OUT though because spectators lining the course will also be armed with their own buckets full of water, ready to strike!

*Indiana Jones stations:  Are you quick and agile enough to make it through these stations without getting soaked?  Let’s see if you are brave enough to try!

Each participant is also geared with a water gun, which means war during the three mile run you are constantly dodging water. Come the finish get ready to ride one giant water slide. Get ready for a wild and fun after party with more slip n slides, WOW bubbles, a log roll challenge, live music and cool refreshments. The water themed doesn’t stop at the finish- expect a balloon toss challenge and the largest water balloon fight in the world of course!

If this race sounds like it’s a fit for your adventurous spirit, be glad the creators of the race-spent time in Thailand for their honeymoon. This is when Lauren and Scott Jones became fascinated by Thailand’s traditional water festival called Songkran. Thai people ring in the New Year by taking the streets for an all out water war.  Hoses turned full blast pair with water guns and water balloons to douse the streets.  “We want to get people outside and play like a kid again. Everyone has fond memories of running through sprinklers as a kid,” says Lauren.
