Forbidden Broadway Takes Stage at Denver’s Garner Galleria
It’s an all local cast for Forbidden Broadway: Alive & Kicking now playing at Denver’s Garner Galleria Theater through March 15. The show creates amusing and hilarious lyrics to poke fun fun musicals that include The Book of Mormon, Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Marry Poppins, Avenue Q, Wicked, Les Miserables, Pippin and a slate of features. The hilarious rewrites roll out from “Jersey Boys”-style ditty — to the tune of “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” — that goes, “Oh what a blight, stealing songs from 1963.” The waltz from “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella’ ” now has the lyric, “Five decades ago I saw you, as a special on network TV.”
The show was first seen at a supper Club in New York City in 1982. It was meant to be a simple cabaret act to give creator/lyricist Gerard Alessandrini a way to find an agent and showcase his talents. It turned into one of the longest running musical comedy reviews.
