Littleton, Colorado is getting more attraction with the addition of K1 Speed. We chat with owners David & Susan Danglard who started the concept in 2003 by following their passion for racing.
Q: How did the idea of K1 Speed come to be?
David and Susan Danglard founded K1 Speed in 2003, after making a significant and unlikely career transition from 12 years in the wholesale denim industry to pursuing their shared passion for racing. Inspired by European concepts of gas-fueled indoor karting centers, the couple dreamed up an electric facility with minimal environmental impact and a greener, more energy efficient footprint. In spirit of the American dream, they sold their existing business, house and toys, and worked 24/7 on every aspect of the new business for the first two years. After the success of their first location in Carlsbad, they decided to open the very first indoor karting chain in the US.
Q: How is K1 Speed different from others in this category?
Safety is our main concern. We want to make sure each and every customer is comfortable with their experience visiting and racing at our centers. Upon registering the process from purchasing a race to racing on the track is painless.
Q: What made you all decide to expand to Littleton?
We saw much demand in Denver and found a wonderful community in Highlands Ranch/Littleton area. With all of our centers we do our homework on surrounding areas and are very excited to bring high-energy, heart-pumping kart racing to Denver!
Q: What is the biggest challenge of the business? And biggest reward?
Locating buildings that suit our needs in each market. We are meticulous about our surroundings and finding the best location for our centers. The biggest reward would be seeing the smiles on customers/racers faces when visiting our centers. Whether it be from a Birthday Party to Arrive & Drive race we want to make sure your experience will leave you happy and wanting more.
Q: What is something readers would be surprised to know about you?
We are company owned nationwide with our corporate offices housed in Irvine, CA. There are no signs of stopping when it comes to opening centers. With 25 locations by end of 2014, we will see no less than six more centers opening next year. The sky’s is the limit.
