Manitou Springs FruitcakeToss: Saturday January 12th
Fruitcakes are one of the most ridiculed desserts in America. The sugary treat has even prompted the Fruitcake Toss in Manitou Springs, where people come with one goal: to have fun while getting rid of the heavy set dessert. The local chamber of commerce started the event after brainstorming a common question following the holidays. “What in the world should I do with this fruitcake?”
What started out as a toss 18 years ago, has evolved to so much more over the years. There are several categories this year and even the chance to win a trophy.
Individuals or teams can enter the following contests:
Kids Toss– No adults allowed in this competition! Kids can take their hand in seeing just how far they can launch the cake.
The Fruitcake Toss– The person who tosses the 1 pound fruitcake the farthest is the winner. There is also a 2 lb fruitcake competition for any strong arms.
The Fruitcake Launch – teams use a mechanical device to launch a fruitcake.
The Pneumatic Guns or Cannon – individual competitors use a pneumatic spud gun to shoot their fruitcake in the air.
*There are also two more competitions, including one where participants catch a launched fruitcake, and also the accuracy division to hit a target.
**The 18th annual event kicks off this Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Manitou Springs High School. (401 El Monte Place Manitou Springs, CO 80829)
There is no cost to participate but fruit cake goers are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item that will be donated. Fruitcakes will be available to rent for $1, however, it’s best to bring your own!
Time for A Laugh:
Why is history like a fruit cake? Because it is full of dates!
Why do fruitcakes make ideal gifts? Because the Postal Service has been unable to find a way to damage them.
And then there is everybody’s favorite fruit cake recipe: Nuts, dried fruit, eggs, brown sugar, salt and a couple bottles of bourbon – for the chef.
