Overview + Video: Muskoka Canada
We head to Muskoka, Ontario, just two hours North of Toronto, to trade in the fast pace of city life for an immersive few days in nature.
Dog sledding with Snow Forest Adventures kicks off our visit after a briefing from well trained guides on how to mush. This takes dog sledding to a whole new level of fun, as I run behind the sled before hopping on again, calling out to Blackie, Echo and Chester, some of the huskies leading the charge. I jump off again as we wind around a corner in the forested Algonquin Provincial Park, this time picking up speed downhill, staying hot on the sleigh of our guide.
Winter adventure continues, this time behind the seat a powerful and nearly new Yamaha snowmobile to see even more of the wonderful views at a quicker speed. We practice turns on a beginner route before moving into a higher gear and even more scenic terrain throughout Deerhurst Adventure Park. Now that I am feeling comfortable riding, I pick up speed on a flat stretch for one last rush. Temperatures can be fiercely cold, but guides make sure we are suited up with heavy duty outwear, including suits, boots and gloves, that keep us warm for the entire ride. Insider Trip: Check out the tour options offered through Deerhurst Resort.
To wind down the day, we rent snowshoes from our home base, Deerhurst Resort before trekking to Lookout Point for the ultimate Muskoka view. Our guide leads us through thick forests of maple trees on the one-mile climb to the top to watch the sunset over the town. From here, prepare to be so taken by Muskoka that you will already be planning your next trip back.
