Ouray, CO
Pristine places like Ouray, Colorado prove that small town communities radiate something special. The town, void of chains, is instead filled with shops and business that are full of life, character and originality. There are 13 hotels, 13 bed and breakfasts, 19 restaurants and 50 shops. It’s 8 blocks long and 8 blocks wide.
One of the claims to fame here is that parts of the original film “True Grit,” starring John Wayne, were filmed here. Much of the true grit remains after the filming and is evident in the community. The locals here support each other like nothing else.
The 900 people that live here year around must really get along as indicated by the boring police blotter. Reports of someone locking their keys in the car usually tops the list. In Ouray, bears seem to be the biggest criminals.
Expand beyond the main street and you will find 718 hiking trails showing off exquisite wildflowers, waterfalls, and wildlife. Hop aboard a horse, hold on tight to canyon down a waterfall or gaze at the stars from a campground.
You may come as a tourist, but will leave feeling apart of this special community, knowing you will be back for repeat visits.

I remember as a kid my step-dad taking me to visit his best friend that lived in Ouray. The old west ambience reminded me of my childhood in Arizona, but with a much milder climate. My next big trip with the family will be to head out west and Ouray will definitely be a place we will spend a few days.
It is such a spectacular town with that special small town feel. It’s also place where I see businesses strive to help each other instead of competing with each other. I hope you get the chance to take your family!
