Oyster Race Tests Both Physical and Brain Power
What do you get when you mix the ‘Amazing Race’ with a duathlon? The Oyster Race of course! And if you were lucky enough to participate in Saturday’s race, you likely found yourself in a mountain of fun. Teams of 3-6 race through the city unraveling clues and challenges that test both athleticism and smarts.
Here’s the low down: At the start of the race, teams are given a passport with the first challenge. After it’s completed and stamped, teams race back to the transition area for the next passport and challenges. The passports alternate with instructions for teams to bike and run. Depending on the route you take or short cuts you sneak in, teams end up racing anywhere between 10 and 30 miles by bike and foot.
Along the way you can expect to do everything from paddle a teammate hitched to your canoe in a raft across Sloan’s Lake, endure a mini boot camp and put your mind to work to figure out brain buster exercisers. Speed racers can finish the course in a under three hours while others can take as long as six.
The national race, which originated in Denver, benefits Make-A-Wish Colorado. The organization grants wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.
