Review: Odysseo by Cavalia in Denver, Colorado

Equine acrobatics, stunts, stilts and live music set the stage for the newest show, Odysseo by Cavalia, under the familiar Big Top Tent near the Pepsi Center. Headquartered in Montreal, Canada and started by Normand Latourelle, formerly of Cirque du Soleil, the $35 million dollar production brings out cutting edge multi-media special effects, beautiful demonstrations of human and animal accord and astonishing theatrical acts from performers representing over 14 nations.

It didn’t take long for the audience to start cheering as performers daringly ride stampeding horses across stage while performing stunts including a one foot drag, shoulder stand and back drags. It’s not just the trick riding that captivates eyes and keeps hands clapping- but also the transformative set that showcases some of the worlds most beautiful landscapes. An enchanted forest, to rolling green fields and even the Northern Lights before the stage is flooded with 80,000 gallons of water, turning the set into a shimmering lake.  Rising over the distant hill, a herd of horses appear over the horizon, ready to showcase more tricks, all in front of a 180-degree panoramic digital waterfall. Adding even more theatrical effects, the entire show is driven by live musicians, including vocals, guitar, mandolin, flutes and percussion for an even more compelling show- you will feel it.

The show is in Denver through the end of October. Ticket prices range from $24.50 to $149.50 plus taxes and fees. Carri’s Catch: After horses retire from the show, generally after performing for six years, they are taken to a 72-acre farm where they are no longer ridden or trained. Other horses are given a semi retirement and are often times adopted by people that meet the criteria.
