Ship’s Knees Inn: Cape Cod

A twist of fate kept the Ship’s Knees Inn tied to the Butcher family. After
inheriting a portion of the property from his father, Peter Butcher decided to sell the 1820 restored Sea Captains home that sits off the coast off Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 2001. After reaching a sale agreement, Peter and his wife, Denise, were cruising to say goodbye when something didn’t feel quite right. “I remember pulling up on Nauset Heights Road and thought we have an incredible property here,” confesses Peter. Luckily for any guest that has stayed at the Ships Knees Inn or has yet to be a guest, there was a fault in the contract. “Without that fault we wouldn’t be here,” reveals Peter.
That would be tough- considering the couple has a breezy commute living in a
home directly behind the cozy bed and breakfast. Not to mention the property is less than a quarter mile from the white sandy shores of Nauset Beach in Orleans. Chances are you will taste the sea salt in the air! Capitalizing on the dynamite surroundings of the sea side town, Pete and Denise went to work to make it a home for any guest. “We are not a cookie cutter hotel. It makes it more real for people,” says Peter.
There are no doubts that’s truth. From a warm greeting to when guests arrive
to the refreshing atmosphere, this Bed and Breakfast gets it. Peter and Denise credit each other on the successes of their business. “Denise has a way of paying attention to details,” says Peter. Point proven- everything from fresh cut flowers in rooms, a homemade breakfast to charge your morning and charming grounds bursting with buds show the Ship’s Knees Inn covers every corner.
“Peter never forgets a name. Guests are sometimes surprised that we do know everyone’s names. You just don’t find that anymore,” reveals Denise. Point equally proven- Sitting in the main office I noticed every guest checking out or coming through for suggestions on what to see is warmly greeted with a gentle hello, genuine smile followed by their name. Talk about feeling at home!
For this couple, recapturing the home couldn’t have been a sweeter choice.
“We made the place an extension of us. It’s relaxing, enjoyable and comfortable,” says Denise. “We like what we do. We set our expectations high to make sure our guests are having a great experience,” add Peter.
You don’t have to travel far past your nautical themed room to start your vacation. On the property you will find a glowing fire pit surrounded by white painted rocking chairs, plenty of comfortable seating areas surrounded by budding gardens and a crisp pool waiting for you to take a dip. There is parking on site, along with a complimentary buffet style continental breakfast. All rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi, flat screen cable TV, refrigerators, and air conditioning (in-season 6/15-9/30).
