Breckenridge is a charming and historic small town in Colorado that boasts some of the top skiing in the country, along with one of the best après-ski scenes. At Breckenridge Ski Resort, visitors can take advantage of more than 3,000 acres of ski terrain and five peaks, all with one lift ticket. That includes Breckenridge’s above tree line intermediate runs, which are what the resort is best known for.
The resort is a stone’s throw from town (you can practically ski to Main Street), and there are plenty of fun, casual and friendly places to relax after a day on the slopes. But don’t think Breckenridge’s only adventure activity is skiing: you haven’t really seen the mountains here until you’ve done it on a snowmobile.
Good Times Adventures offers one, two and three-hour guided snowmobile tours in the national forest. And don’t worry if you’ve never been on a snowmobile before, this tour company caters to beginners and experienced riders alike. Once you hop on, your guide will teach you how to use the vehicle and take you to a practice area so you can get comfortable before hitting the trails. A highlight of the tour would be the summit of Georgia Pass, where on a clear day you can see about 120 miles in all directions. The best thing about this tour company is that it limits group sizes to around six for an intimate experience.
The perfect place to warm up after your snowmobile adventure is the Breckenridge Distillery, where bourbon and vodka are made on site. Its spirits are exceptionally high quality due to the mountainside location, which allows the distillery to utilize the natural snow melt water. Bourbon is defined by its water source, and the high mineral content in the water here definitely improves the taste. The distillery’s tasting room is open every day except Monday, and curious visitors can even take a tour of the facility and maybe bring home some spirits that they bottled themselves!
There’s no better way to end a day in Breckenridge than strolling the streets of the beautiful and historic town, which is filled with delicious restaurants, boutique shops and great bars for the après-ski crowd. A trip to town wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Breckenridge Brewery & Pub, which is practically an institution as the third oldest craft brewery in Colorado.
What’s unique about Breckenridge Brewery is that its brewers and equipment are front and center, not hidden somewhere in the back. Grab a seat at the bar and you can chat with the brewers and watch the process happen right before your eyes. The beer offerings are varied and there’s something for everyone, but don’t forget to try some of the experimental brews and one-offs that you won’t find anywhere else in the country. The food menu at Breckenridge Brewery is also excellent, and the beer is incorporated into many dishes as an ingredient.
