The wait is nearly over! The outdoor sporting goods store, Cabela’s, is stepping up its presence in Colorado, with two stores opening on August 15 in both Thornton and Lone Tree. The interior, designed to make you feel like you are outside, includes high vaulted skylights to bring in natural light as well as trophy animal mounts re-created in their natural habitats. You will also find two 8,000 gallon aquariums filled with fish, elevated dioramas and hand painted murals that add to the atmosphere.

Education and demos are incredibly important to the retailer, which is why expert employees are always available for tips and advice. Whether practicing your aim at the indoor archery range or your cast in the fly fishing department, you know you are taking in tips from pros. “We hire experts who have a have a passion for the outdoors,” says General Manager of the Lone Tree store, Karen Koons. “They are in their element here and it shows.” Schedules for classes and demonstrations can be found on line.

Make sure to stop in the gun library where there are several historic firearms on display and for purchase. One of the guns, selling for $32,500, dates back to 1894 and once belonged to the Arapahoe County Sherriff. “It’s like a toy story for gun collectors,” says Koons.

With a focus on giving back, the Lone Tree store has adopted three miles of trails behind the store. In addition to maintaining them, the store will also use the land for education and demos. When it comes sustainability, Cabela’s is taking the lead by composting waste from the deli and by recycling plastic and other materials.

When you visit, save room for lunch. The grab-no-go deli serves up fresh fare as well as 30 types of fudge made in house.

Carri’s Catch: Ok, ladies camo isn’t exactly the most fashionable. But there is a new line at Cabela’s designed by women for women. The cut is more flattering and is made with material. There is also high tech camo that changes color with the weather to keep you disguised in the wild!
