Unser Racing, Denver

When told racing suits were part of the deal, I was ready to swoop right into my very own go-kart. Unser Racing is a serious indoor go-kart facility located right here in Denver.

The name of the course may ring a bell with all of you professional racecar fans. Johnny Unser, son of racer Jerry Unser – first Unser to race at the Indianapolis 500 – followed in his father’s footsteps, competing in the Indy 500, 24 Hours of Daytona, Le Mans, as well as other high-profile races. Clearly, this was the perfect guy to transform a former car dealership, located at

7300 N Broadway, into a world of racing.

The track itself sits on the second floor of the building. Below, on ground level, racers 12 years of age or older, are required to take a 15 minute safety and training course before stepping into the kart. Races total $30 dollars each, which includes all equipment, the safety course, and a complete seven minutes of fierce racing.

Racers line the track and prepare to race around 11 curves with plenty of straight-aways, flying up to speeds of 50 miles per hour. Once you rev up your engine, its seven minutes to race on the quarter-mile grand prix course. Around and around, lap after lap, you hopefully leaving those you came with in the dust. And you can prove it by looking at the results on Unser’s state of the art Electronic Training System. Each lap is timed to the 100th of a second. Your performance is also compared to the best times of the week. If you’re lucky, fast, and skilled, your name will carry over.
