Cleveland: Where to Eat
When the power went out at the Cleveland Art Museum, my excitement to explore the city went out right along with it. A friend who lives near the city really talked up the place- the outdoor atrium, Monet’s lilies and the fact that it was free. But with no lights, the museum was cleared out and we were on our way to instead discover a lot of great foodie spots in the city. The following day, I needed to get back on a healthy track and have included some healthier options to mix in as well.
1. Momocho (1835 Fulton Rd) famous for guacamole flights, throws a lot of flavor into the mix, including, goat cheese and even a smoked trout and bacon. I also tried the pineapple, which was a bit too sweet for me but is one of the house favorites for anyone who loves a citrus kick. The restaurant also offers margarita flights- including a cucumber, red pepper and hibiscus and of course traditional. The cucumber was my top pick.
There is a serious chance you won’t be hungry after the guacamole feast (they are full sizes so bring all your friends) but in case you still need to fill up, try the coffee ancho braised beef brisket.
2. For happy hour and to save a few bucks, check out Bar Cento (1948 West 25th Street) in Ohio City. This place specializes in Italian but also serves up some great tasting burgers. During happy hour, find house wine and draft beer for 5 bucks, a Veggie Burger for $6 and Beef Burger for $7. (Happy hour: Sunday – Friday 4:30-7:00.) The concept comes from Sam McNulty, who also is the force behind Nano Brewery, Bier Markt and Market Garden Brewery – which offers up a rustic modern atmosphere and serves beers brewed in house along with guest beers. While you are there, try the Midnight Vorlauf Coffee Porter- made with coffee from Rising Star Coffee Company.
3. Mitchells’ Ice Cream (1867 West 25th St.) also in Ohio City Neighborhood scoops vegan, yogurt and regular ice cream. Inside find a bright and colorful atmosphere with clear behind the counter so customers can see where all the ice cream is made. Try the Vegan Salted Caramel Pecan (coconut milk, with caramelized brown sugar). On a non-vegan note, try the Great Lakes Brewing Company Porter Chocolate Chunk, made with beer from the brewery that is set up on the same street.
Healthful notes: When you aren’t splurging, here are some spots that offer up options that are nutritious,.
4. Constantino’s Market (1278 West 9th Street) sells Kombucha, produce (though I don’t know if it’s organic) and Applegate cold cuts. This is a good spot if you are looking for a quick snack.
5. Heinen’s (900 Euclid Avenue) has a fresh salad bar and other house made goodies (also not sure if they are organic). You can also find some healthful drinks like kombucha and healthier options mixed in with not so great ones when it comes to chips and chocolate. The store is located in a former bank and is worth a peak inside. The open atrium is stunning.
6. Anna In The Raw (inside the IMG Building at St. Clair and E. 9th Ave) is not a storefront spot but located inside an office building. Find soups, salads and sandwiches made with wholesome ingredients. Order up the zucchini pasta, a rising star coffee and side of free-range chicken.
7. Town Hall (1909 West 25th St) in Ohio City offers a menu that is 100% free of GMO’s as well as primarily organic. This is a sit down or order out type of place that serves salads, sandwiches, pizza and bowls packed with rice, different proteins and veggies. Catch a bulletproof coffee mixed with coconut oil and a grass fed butter for the ultimate energy boost.
Carri’s Catch: With all the good food, you may need a gym to go along with it. Check out Vedas Fitness, on the corner of St. Clair and E. 9th Ave, for a spot that has the latest equipment and also group classes including TRX, boot camp and yoga. Owner, Tammy Polenz, revamped the spot with her background as a fitness competitor. Day passes are $15
Thanks for the comment! It was nice to find Constantino’s for a little healthy food. Of course, Town Hall has that covered too. Awesome to see Cleveland come into it’s own.
Cleveland is a lot of things- and is as fine a walking town as anywhere in the country. Glad you highlighted Town Hall and Constantino’s.
