Paddy Spence, the former VP of Sales & Marketing at Kashi and a Harvard Business School graduate, found interest in the product after giving sugar up 13 years ago. As an avid triathlete, he realized the amount of sugar he was taking in through supplements and energy bars. “I thought I was a healthy guy who ate only organic foods. But realized that I was taking in so much sugar with different foods like energy bars,” says Spence.
On a quest to turn his health around, he and his wife headed to a cabin for a week where the nearest grocery store was 12 miles away, which meant the temptations could be easily avoided. “It was a fascinating process. I lost 10 pounds in the first month and my energy levels evened out.” Products like Zevia help Spence keep his sugar intake lower. Now, he hopes others are able to experience the same health benefits.
“Soda is nostalgic. We try to create familiar flavors that people grew up drinking or gave up drinking because of the sugar content.” Among the 15 flavors on store shelves, you will find Orange, Ginger Root Beer, Black Cherry, Ginger Ale, Lemon-Lime Twist, Dr. Zevia, Crème Soda and Grape.
Zevia is sold throughout the United States in stores including Target, Whole Foods, Sprouts and King Scoopers. The products will also be available in Europe at the end of this year and can already be found in other countries including Canada, Australia and Latin America.
