5 Places Not to Be Missed When Planning Your Euro Trip
Europe is the dream destination of so many young travellers but the size and the number of possible destinations can be quite daunting. Here’s a couple of must-see destinations when you’re planning your Europe trip.
Paris
Paris is a city that never fails to live up to expectations. There is a reason that people have written books and songs and poems about it for hundreds of years, Paris deserves its literary love letter. While the Eiffel Tower might not be as tall as expected, there is something special about climbing all of those stairs and looking out on this historic city. Paris isn’t short on scenic views: be sure to check out the Arc de Triomphe as well for another stellar view. Museum lovers will be particularly pleased with the Louvre, but even those less interested in Europe’s art and history should make time for a visit to the Orangerie Gallery housing Monet’s water lilies. Make Paris the beginning of your European love story.
London
London is a massive sprawling city, well worth a lengthy visit and a careful examination, it was rated one of the most visited cities in the world just last year! Check out Oxford Street and Regent Street for some of the world’s first and best department stores, or try Covent Garden for a more relaxed vibe with covered stalls serving up everything from artisanal soaps to vintage clothing. Remember to try out one of London’s many Indian restaurants: they are some of the best thanks to the city’s large Indian population. There is something for everyone.
Barcelona
Barcelona somehow manages to conjure a completely unique culture unlike any other city in Spain. Spanish speaking travellers may be shocked to find locals speaking something they don’t recognize. Barcelona is part of the Spanish province of Catalonia and as a result the local language is Catalan. Get lost in Barcelona’s charming neighborhoods and stay up way past your bedtime eating tapas, you certainly won’t be pressed for things to do. The Picasso Museum is a must for fans and visit any of Gaudi’s many buildings for a tour of his bizarrely charming architecture.
Rome
Rome is one of Europe’s more overwhelming cities but it makes it nonetheless wonderful. It’s a beautiful spot in the summer time and the beach as Lido di Ostia is less than an hour away. It is exceptionally busy regardless of the time of year and the traffic is out of this world. Travel tip – try crossing the road with the little old Italians ladies, no one messes with them. Cross the river into Trastevere (literally – across the river in Italian) for some amazing seafood and a break from the crowds.
Berlin
Berlin fuses cold war history and youth culture in a truly wonderful way. Visit the many museums, attractions and the remains of the Berlin Wall for a taste of the city’s historical legacy. The piece of the Berlin Wall that remains is on the side of the Spree river and artists from all around the world have painted on it. Stay up a little later and check out one of Berlin’s amazing all night parties, straggling home at 6am is a memory you won’t soon forget.
I totally agree that each of these cities is well worth the focus, on a Euro journey. My just-completed trip to “The Continent” took me to Paris for four days, and several other destinations in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, each out of personal interest, or commitment to family members.
I have been to London, previously, and highly recommend it, for at least a five day visit. I could have spent 2-3 more days in Paris, easily. The other mentioned cities are definite possibilities for my next visit to Europe, in 2017.
