Owner and instructor of Purre Barre Greenwood Village, Briget Russomanno, says “Purre Barre works. That’s why our clientele keeps growing. It’s changing bodies nationwide.”

Fitness you can take to the streets! Located in Englewood, Apex Movement’s South Denver location houses the world’s largest Parkour gym. Parkour, also known as free running, incorporates vaulting, leaping and flipping to negotiate obstacles. Courses are designed to improve strength, speed, agility, stamina, precision and endurance. However, athletes stress that Parkour requires more than physical fitness, but also training your body and mind to overcome roadblocks. “Expect functional fitness where you use your entire body to perform movements,” says Parkour instructor Charles St. John.
Perhaps intimidating initially, Parkour fitness is worth the leap! Beginner courses emphasize basic movements such as landing techniques, vaulting, crawling and balancing. Progressive in nature, each class builds on the course before it, and develops the confidence needed to embrace the Parkour phenomenon.

3. Yama Yoga
Mix up your practice on the mat. Yin Yoga is gaining popularity as yogis seek deeper, more meditative yoga styles. With a focus on connective tissues in the hips, pelvis and spine, practitioners are challenged to hold poses for five to eight minutes. Yama Yoga Village offers yin yoga as a way to teach students to overcome discomfort. Instructor Rochelle Townsend says the benefits also extend off the mat, “For most people I’d say that yin initially is a physical practice. It is not easy to sit in postures for upwards of 5 minutes without fidgeting. With time, the mind begins to except the discomfort and then the practice takes on a world of its own.” Take your practice further with classes held seven days a week, for all levels of practitioners

Train effectively, not incessantly. In one short hour, CrossFit aims to improve strength and conditioning through functional movements, variation and all out physical exertion. Each session includes a warm-up, cool down and ‘work out of the day.” Prescribed exercises include weights, rowing, sprinting, kettle bells, pull up bars, even gymnastics. “It’s about training more efficiently not longer. You could train here for two years and never do the same workout twice,” says owner of Cross Fit Littleton, Ian Starr. CrossFit appeals to a wide variety of fitness fanatics, from cyclists and firefighters to professional MMA fighters and endurance athletes, even those new to the world of fitness. Stay in the zone…the orange zone! Orange Theory Fitness, located in Highlands Ranch, sets itself apart from standard interval and boot camp programs by providing participants with a heart rate monitor. During each 60-minute class, heart rates are tracked and displayed as a way to encourage workout enthusiasts to stay in the “orange zone,” or at 85 percent of their maximum heart rate. “Science tells us that by staying in that zone between 12 and 20 minutes we can continue to burn calories for up to 36 hours after class,” says owner Wendy Skaalerud. Sessions consist of four 10-30 minute intervals including work on the treadmill and with rowing machines, medicine balls, weights, and TRX suspension bands. A strider and spin bike provide options for non-runners.
