It’s not just about tasting food; it’s about connecting with the North End.

Jim, our knowledgeable guide, is smarter than a cookbook. He spent 25 years working as a professional chef and restaurant owner. By spending nearly everyday in the Italian District he is a familiar and welcome face to many shop and restaurant owners. He has the down low on ingredients Italians use, how they cook and traditions they follow.

The first of six stops started at Maria’s Pastry. Maria passed on samples of her specialties, like the lobster tail, marzipan and macaroons. As we filled up, Jim filled us in on the fresh ingredients inside each delicate pastry.

Polcari’s, another longstanding storefront, has been around for 70 years!  This shop sells spices, grains, beans, candy, nuts, pasta and coffee, and that’s just a taste of what you will find inside. Many restaurant owners come here to buy ingredients fresh that day to serve that night.

Monica’s Mercato greets you with savory smells in this Italian deli. This is the stop for the famous Italian sandwich and the sought after Italian meats and cheeses. Don’t forget to check out the homemade pasta!

You will even open the doors to history as you venture inside the first wine shop granted a liquor license after prohibition! The Limoncello will play to your delight. The perfect top off to end a tour that will open your eyes to the North End.

Boston Food tours also dives into Chinatown! To learn more about both tours visit: https://www.bostonfoodtours.com
