Modern Pastry, Boston

A sweetshop on Boston’s Hanover Street whips up age-old recipes. Modern Pastry  has been in the family for seventy years and has stuck to many of the same recipes all the way from Italy. The cannoli’s here entice those with a big sweet tooth. These pastries are filled fresh on the order. But why stop at a just a cannoli? There are sheets, shelves and stacks more to choose from.

It may  be gourmet but the prices don’t reflect the quality. If you see something on the menu you are unfamiliar with, don’t be afraid to ask! Here is a quick preview of some Italian treats you might want to reach for.

Babas- A pastry soaked with rum and strega liquors. They can be filled with vanilla custard or enjoyed without.

Chocolate Ganache- Three layers or chocolate sponge cake soaked with rum and strega liquor. It can be filled with chocolate mousse and topped with rick, dark chocolate ganache. It is drizzled with white chocolate ganache to top it off.

Anigetti- A soft round cookies topped with  lemon or anise frosting.
