Holy Cross Winery, Canon City
The magnificent structure of the Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City may first catch your eye, but the winery located next door makes certain you will settle in for awhile. The idea was started by Benedictine Fathers at the Abbey next door and blossomed into a full-blown winery. The owners have since changed but the wine keeps bottling. The spectrum reaches from red to white. There is even an innovative Apple Blossom, made from apples. Some grapes are grown on the ground with the majority trucked in from Palisade and Grand Junction.
The tasting room is open daily. Samples are complimentary, with the exception of the reserve bottles, which cost $1.00 to try. After finding the one that suits your taste, guests are invited to sit outside in the outdoor garden, which offers a full view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Monks ran a boarding school for high school students on the grounds until 1985 and the Abbey closed in 2006. Now the grounds are used for local festivals, and of course to celebrate the wine making in the heart of Canon City.
