Kentucky is the center of the universe when it comes to bourbon. The 201 year old Woodford Reserve Distillery is a favorite of locals and open for tours! So what makes it stand out?

1. The distillery is built strategically on a limestone aquifer, which means the water is naturally filtered. Meanwhile, calcium filters in, later to combine with yeast during fermentation.

2. Woodford Reserve looses 50% of bourbon to evaporation, on purpose! By heating the wharehouse off and on during the winter, bourbon is forced to evaporate. The master distillers love when this happens because air is allowed in which creates more flavor.

3. Barrels used to age Woodford’s spirit are made in Louisville with 9 month open air dried wood that is toasted prior to the charring process. This gives the barrell a buttery, creamy vanilla note.

Carri’s Catch: In the rolling bluegrass hills near Woodford Reserve, you will notice several Thoroughbred Horse Farms. Many breeders believe the mineral rich water that is also used to make the bourbon, helps horses develop strong bones for racing.
