Kentucky Derby Festival Kicks off Derby Week

The kick off of the Kentucky Derby Festival signals the start of one of the most exciting times in Louisville, KY. The first festival kicked off in 1956 with a budget of just $640.00. The grandfather of longtime volunteer, Leslie Broecker, was on the founding committee. The festival cast so much spirit in Louisville that it continues to grow. Now in it’s 56th year, the festival holds more than 70 events in just two weeks, drawing in more than 1.5 million people. “Derby means something different to everyone. For some it’s hats and experiencing Churchill Downs. For some it’ s the mini marathon or watching the parade,” says Leslie. Here are some of the event highlights.

1. Thunder Over Louisville. As the largest firework show in North America, you are assured this is a showstopper.

2. Great Steamboat Race. The Belle of Louisville, which made her debut as a passenger ferry in 1914 takes on the Delta Queen for a race down the Ohio River.

3. The Great Bed Race. One of the wackiest events you will find at any festival, beds are put on wheels, decorated and raced around a racetrack.
