Across the street from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, you can slip into Wagner’s Pharmacy for a bite to eat and see a famous Hollywood set. A scene of the movie Secretariat was filmed here- Fast forward to the 1 hr. 4 min mark. The nostalgic environment is so true to the earlier days of horse racing that orders are still taken on notepads, service is gruff (but efficient) and when it comes to the it’s down home comfort.
Plates of honey-baked ham, eggs, patty melts, thick chili and BLT’s slide this drug store lunch counter. If you are looking for a true classic- try the Derby sandwich, which is made with ham, tomato, mayo and Swiss cheese. No matter what you choose to chow on- I suggest you order extra pickles!
